Scrap Busting Patchwork Coasters

 I love a scrap busting project - anything to use up those tiny offcuts of gorgeous fabrics that I can never bear to throw away. I keep them all in a drawstring bag, ready for projects just like this one.

I recently made this set of six patchwork coasters for my Mum's mother's day pressie. This quick project was a perfect combination of scrap busting and patchworking.

The fabric scraps I used were left over from the blue bunting I made for my Mum's dining room back in November. The fabric was originally from ohsewcrafty.co.uk and matches her collection of blue pottery. 

After a lot of googling, I decided to use an online tutorial for this Pinwheel Coaster set. It seemed the most straight forward method and I really liked the pinwheel effect.

Construction was very straight forward. For each coaster, I used two 5" squares of the patterned fabrics and a 5" square of cream polycotten fabric for the back. Each of the patterned fabrics was cut into triangles diagonally and then sewn together. Inside, I used a square of iron-on wadding. It was then just a case of sewing around three edges, turning right side out, pressing and topstitching.

I had a lot of fun playing around with colour and pattern combinations until I finally settled on these. I think these look great and my Mum really liked them - they look so cute on her pine dresser with all her blue and white china! 

 I'm enjoying some time off for the school holidays at the moment and currently have quite a few sewing and knitting projects on the go, which I am hoping to share soon. Only five day's left until my maternity leave officially starts and 5 weeks to go until my due date!
